Lubrication Strategies and Seal Upgrades for Paper Machine Dryer Bearings in High-Temperature, High-Humidity Environments

Share This Article:

In the European and global paper manufacturing industry, the dryer section remains one of the most demanding environments for rotating equipment. Dryer bearings must contend with sustained temperatures often exceeding 100°C, steam-laden atmospheres, and water ingress risks. For procurement and maintenance teams, the challenge is twofold: selecting the correct lubricant and upgrading sealing systems to ensure bearing reliability, reduce unplanned downtime, and comply with tightening environmental regulations.

Modern synthetic lubricants—specifically polyalphaolefin (PAO) and ester-based greases—have largely replaced traditional mineral oils in these applications. They offer superior thermal stability, reduced oxidation, and longer re-greasing intervals. For European buyers, it is critical to verify that the chosen lubricant meets the paper machine’s operating temperature range and has proven resistance to washout from condensation. Additionally, fully synthetic greases with a high dropping point (above 220°C) and a thickener such as lithium complex or polyurea are preferred to maintain consistency under continuous high heat.

Seal upgrade strategies should focus on excluding moisture and paper dust while retaining lubricant. Traditional lip seals are often insufficient; labyrinth seals with purgeable cavities, magnetic face seals, or double-lip seals with a grease barrier are now standard. When sourcing seals, European procurement teams must ensure compatibility with the bearing housing dimensions and the specific steam and condensate conditions. Many global suppliers offer retrofittable seal kits designed for common dryer bearing housings, which can be specified during maintenance overhauls or new machine procurement.
