Electric Chain Hoist Inspection & Maintenance: What to Check Before Every Shift

Share This Article:

A chain hoist rarely fails without warning. The first clue usually shows up days earlier — a twisted load chain, a hook latch that will not close, a brake that lets the load drift. Catching it costs minutes. Missing it costs downtime, and sometimes a damaged load.

The pre-shift walkaround

Run this short visual and functional check before the first lift of every shift:

Load chain — no twists, kinks, stretch, corrosion or cracked links

Hook and latch — no cracks or deformation, latch closes fully

Brake — raise a light load and hold; it must not drift

Limit switches — upper and lower stops cut the motor

Pendant and cable — buttons and emergency stop respond, no exposed conductor

Housing and drive — no cracks, oil leaks, loose fasteners or unusual noise

Scheduled maintenance

Lubricate the load chain with creeping oil; keep brake discs free of oil and grease, unglazed and even in thickness

Measure chain wear with a gauge and replace at the elongation limit in your manual

Check the gearbox oil level and top up to spec

Test overload protection and record the result

Know your intervals

ASME B30.16 defines the pre-operation, frequent and periodic inspection classes for electric chain hoists; under OSHA 1910.179, "frequent" means daily to monthly, and "periodic" one to twelve months. Keep a written record — an auditable log is what inspectors and insurers ask for first.

Less maintenance by design

VERTEX electric chain hoists pair a sealed aluminium alloy die-cast housing with a 100% pure copper coil motor (Class F insulation), 24V / 36V low-voltage, heat-treated G80 load chain. Low-headroom, dust-free and explosion-proof BT4 / CT4 builds are available, together with factory-direct spare parts and OEM / ODM or SKD / CKD supply.
