The basic premise of Near Infrared (NIR) light therapy is that long wave light stimulates cellular energy metabolism and energy production. Infrared energy is invisible but penetrates deep into the body's soft tissues, muscles, joints and bones. Three main light-sensitive molecules - hemoglobin, myoglobin and cytochrome c oxidase - absorb light in the NIR range. Of these, cytochrome c oxidase is the most important mechanism of photo biomodulation (or low-intensity laser therapy, LLLT) and is associated with cellular energy (ATP) production.
