These nanoparticles are modified to provide carboxyl groups permitting the covalent attachment of proteins or ligands onto the surface of the nanoparticles by specific reagents (e.g. EDC), so as to use for protein purification and separation, nucleic acid purification, affinity chromatography, cell isolation, and clinical diagnosis, etc.
